What is the shelf-life of HeaterMeals and HeaterMeals Plus Meals?
HeaterMeals Entrees are made in a high quality food cooking and packaging process (similar to canning) called retort packaging, so shelf-life is good, and storage is uncomplicated. Retort is a cooking process that uses heat and pressure to cook food in its sealed package - either a retort tray or a retort pouch..
HeaterMeals Entrees & HeaterMeals Plus Entrees come in 3/4 pound retort trays. HeaterMeals EX Entrees and HeaterMeals 3 Entrees are in 3/4 pound retort pouches, similar to military food pouches; but HeaterMeals EX and HeaterMeals 3 retort pouches are 50% larger than MREs.
The USDA asks food manufacturers to print a "recommended consumption date" on each meat or poultry meal. It's not a "safety date" (like on a milk carton).
- HeaterMeals Entrees (in trays) are marked with an easy to read "Please Use By" date of two years after the packaging date - printed on the individual package, and also on the 12 count shipping carton.
- HeaterMeals Plus are stamped with a one year date after we package the meals (due to the commercial snack items, such as cookies & breadsticks in Plus meals).
- All HeaterMeals Pancake Breakfasts have a shelf-life of up to one year after packaging.
- All HeaterMeals 3 Meal Kits have a shelf-life of up to three years after packaging.
- HeaterMeals EX Entrees are designed for Extended Storage of up to five years after packaging.
- To ensure maximum shelf-life, HeaterMeals must be stored at 80 degrees Fahrenheit or below
Similar to properly stored canned food, HeaterMeals Tray Entrées lose a bit of color and nutritional value after a couple of years (5 years for Pouch Entrees).

Heating your HeaterMeals Self-Heating Meals is Easy...
HeaterMeals Tray Entrée
To heat your HeaterMeals Tray Entrée (in HeaterMeals Entrees & HeaterMeals Plus Meal Kits) simply place the pre-cooked, sealed entree in the Food Heater Bag, pour the enclosed packet of water into the Food Heater Bag and reseal. Place the Food Heater Bag back in the box (for field use - box is not required).
In just 10 minutes, the food heater raises the temperature of your sealed, pre-cooked entree 100 degrees F above the starting temperature.
After heating, remove the HeaterMeals Tray Entree, slowly remove meal film cover,

HeaterMeals Pouch Entrée
To heat your HeaterMeals Pouch Entrée (in HeaterMeals EX Entrees & HeaterMeals 3 Meal Kits) simply place the pre-cooked, sealed entree in the Food Heater Bag, pour the enclosed packet of water into the Food Heater Bag and reseal. Place the Food Heater Bag back in the box (for field use - box is not required).
In just 10 minutes, the food heater raises the temperature of your sealed, pre-cooked entree 100 degrees F above the starting temperature.
After heating, remove the pouch entree from the heater bag and open at tear notch. Pour onto enclosed tray and ENJOY!
