Food Makers Quietly Cut Back Salt

1/11/10 - We've all seen the labels on food products announcing "Low Sodium."  By now, most of us know that we should all eat less salt, but how many of us buy reduced sodium food?  According to food makers, not enough.  So they're trying something new.

An article appeared in the "Marketplace" Section of today's Wall Street Journal that explained how food makers have been quietly cutting back on salt levels in their foods for a number of years.  "Amid rising government pressure and consumer concern," reporters Ilan Brat and Maurice Tamman explain, "food makers are taking a new tack in their long-running effort to sell products with less salt."  Several of the major food makers have been lowering salt levels gradually over a number of years, so that consumers won't notice the difference, and keep buying.

Salt

When salt levels were lowered suddenly and dramaticly, consumers found that the change in taste was not to their liking, and they chose not to buy.  So with very little fanfare, and no announcement on thier packaging, food makers continue to lower sodium levels quietly.

Here at HeaterMeals, we're proud to say that our entrees are already lower in salt than other emergency meals and MREs.  In some cases, we're as much as 40% to 60% less!  Yet we've maintained our tasty flavor in our self-heating entrees.  We lowered our sodium levels in 2002 when the U.S. Army Quartermaster Center's Army Center of Excellence, Subsistence (ACES) at Fort Lee, VA launched a low-sodium initiative for shelf-stable meal kits used by the U. S. Armed Forces.  While all shelf-stable meal makers were forced to lower their sodium levels, HeaterMeals saw the opportunity to lead the market, and lowered our salt content the most.  We maintained higher levels of protein and fiber, in our meals, as well, designing them for the typical adult diet.

HeaterMeals continues to be the leading self-heating meal in variety, convenience, taste and nutrition.  As a result, HeaterMeals Self-Heating Meals can be fed to people of all ages, from Scout Troops to Senior Citizens.  We are the most widely used meal for feeding the general public in emergency shelter-in-place applications.
