National Hurricane Awareness Week: Be Prepared, Stay Safe

As the Atlantic hurricane season approaches, it’s crucial to raise awareness about the dangers posed by these powerful storms and to encourage proactive preparation. National Hurricane Preparedness Week, announced this week to cover May 4 to May 10, 2025, serves as a reminder for individuals and communities to take necessary steps to safeguard lives and property.

Understanding the Risks

Hurricanes are not just a coastal problem; they can cause significant damage and loss of life far inland. According to the National Weather Service, the first step in hurricane preparedness is understanding your risk. Hurricanes bring a combination of high winds, heavy rainfall, storm surges, and flooding, which can devastate communities. It is essential to know the types of hazards that could affect your area and to stay informed about weather alerts.

Preparation is Key

President Donald Trump, in his proclamation for National Hurricane Preparedness Week, emphasized the importance of readiness. He urged Americans to develop a comprehensive plan that includes a family evacuation strategy, a supply of non-perishable food, water, medicine, batteries, and other essential items. The President highlighted the need for local authorities to play a significant role in resilience, preparedness, and rapid-response efforts.

Stafford County, Virginia, also encourages residents to begin pre-season preparations by re-stocking or assembling an emergency kit, signing up for weather alerts, and having a plan in place for before, during, and after a storm. The county’s recommendations include securing loose outdoor items, cleaning gutters and drains, trimming or removing dead limbs/trees, and inspecting homes for areas that could be reinforced before a storm hits.

Taking Action

Fox Weather provides valuable insights into hurricane preparedness, emphasizing the importance of knowing your risk and taking action now to be better prepared when the worst happens. The Atlantic hurricane season spans from June 1 to November 30, with the Eastern Pacific season starting earlier on May 15. Although tropical cyclones can develop outside these periods, over 97% of Atlantic activity occurs within this six-month timeframe.
